The Croatian House brings the Bokun Festival program to the Ivo Tijardović Concert Hall on February 19, 2025 - a festival of silent film and other senses: Salvador Dali & Luis Buñuel

Salvador Dali and Luis Buñuel, unbridled, fearless students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid, conquered the prestigious Parisian film scene in 1929 with the short silent film “An Andalusian Dog”. The experimental film, which was based on fragments of the two friends’ dreams, was financed by Buñuel’s mother. The scene in which a man cuts out a woman’s eye became an anthology, while critics of “An Andalusian Dog” classify it as a masterpiece of surrealist film. A year later, “The Golden Age” was made, a controversial silent feature film in which young directors mercilessly criticized the Parisian high society of the time. It was the last collaboration between the two greats, one of whom became a famous painter and the other a respected director.

Bokun Festival – a festival of silent film and other senses on February 19th at 20 pm at the Iva Tijardović Concert Hall brings the program: Salvador Dali & Luis Buñuel.

Through an introductory conversation with award-winning director and producer of animated films Veljko Popović and composer and pianist Hrvoje Puškarić, moderator Ivana Orešić, artistic director of the Bokun Festival, will introduce the audience to the surrealist world of silent films by Dali and Buñuel.

Both films that mark their collaboration, "Andalusian Dog" and "The Golden Age", will be screened with musical accompaniment by the Histriatria Project, which consists of composer and pianist Hrvoje Puškarić, clarinetist and EWI (Electric Wind Instrument) master Toni Kranjac, and Osman Eyublu on violin and electric violin.

The audience can also expect a treat of the evening – the animated film "Destino", which was created in 1945 in collaboration with Salvador Dali and animator and director Walt Disney.

Actor Denis Tomić, with his unique performance on the stage of the Ivo Tijardović Concert Hall, will bring to life the painter, illustrator, performer, designer, cookbook author and filmmaker, one of the greatest eccentrics on the world art scene of the 20th century - Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali Domenech.

The festival's Bokun is a multimedia project created according to the idea of artistic director Ivana Orešić, which explores new dimensions of film art and is created with the help of versatile artists and friends of the festival. The festival's specialty is in composing new music for films and performing it live during the program. The program is created and directed like a theater play so that viewers can experience the festival's theme as well as possible and participate in it as much as possible by interacting with the artists.

In eight years of operation, through various programs and guest appearances, 12 festivals were held, and audiences in Trogir, Šibenik, Vrisnik, Jelsa and Bol were presented with the creativity of artists who marked the 20th century: composer Ivo Tijardović, comedian Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, painter Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dali and Diego Rivera, animator Dušan Vukotić and Walt Disney.

The festival's board collaborates or has collaborated with the Mediterranean Film Festival Split, The Walt Disney Company, the Academy of Arts in Split, the National Community of Montenegrins in Croatia, the Croatian National Theatre in Split, the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo, the embassies of Mexico and Spain, the International Children's Festival Šibenik, the Tourist Boards of Trogir, Jelsa and Šibenik, the Dušan Vukotić Association, the Karlo Grenc Foundation, the Bol Cultural Centre, the Trogir Art Association, the danSing Theatre and, through the "Cycle of Film Music", once with the Croatian House.
