Ivo Tijardović Concert Hall
Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra & Đana Kahriman, violin and artistic direction

Full of Mediterranean sensuality, virtuosity, elegance, humor and spirit, filled with melodies that everyone recognizes - it is, of course, a magnificent cycle of concerts The four seasons Antonio Vivaldi. From a storm to a bonfire, from an idyllic song of birds to a dark, cold rain - all this is powerfully and uniquely evoked in a magnificent masterpiece of the Italian Baroque, by the pen of one of the greatest Venetian musical colorists, who, just like the Serenissima painter, focused on the play of colors and it shines light more than on linear ideas, such as those in the polyphony of the northern masters. These eternal masterpieces will perform Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of an award-winning violinist with an enviable career, Djane Kahriman, who will perform as a soloist in concerts and artistically lead the orchestra.

The concert was co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Republic of Croatia

Egg Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) with the Ospedale della Pietà Orphanage, the Venetian school for girls where he had worked since his ordination at the age of 25, was crucial to his development as a composer. One of the best schools for girls of that time, whose reputation was so great that many noble families sent their daughters there for education, and their concerts were so famous that they were visited by foreigners coming to Venice precisely for them, gave Vivaldi the conditions to work, compose, experiment undisturbed, but also the freedom to travel and research... He composed countless compositions for the residents of the Ospedale, from solo cantatas, motets, oratorios, in which all roles, both female and male, were sung by girls, up to countless instrumental compositions, mainly concerts, of which he left about five hundred. At the same time, he composed numerous operas, of which about fifty have been preserved (and it is mentioned that he wrote as many as 94), which he performed in theaters in Venice and outside, and in which his progressive style was often the target of critics. Vivaldi was equally progressive in his instrumental music, as one of those composers who would contribute to the creation of the three-movement form of the solo concert, as well as the creation of the form ritornella – in which the repetitions are varied ritornella (chorus), mostly performed by the orchestra, alternate with modulating episodes of free thematic material, usually performed by a soloist. It is the basis of the solo concert as we know it to this day. His incredible five hundred concertos bring a variety of form and orchestration, providing models upon which many of Vivaldi's contemporaries, including Johann Sebastian Bach, created. Almost half of Vivaldi's concertos were composed for the violin as a solo instrument, and the most famous of them are The four seasons.

When he composed them, in the period 1718-1720. he briefly left Venice and acted as choirmaster at the court in Mantua, and he published them in 1725 in Amsterdam, as the first four of a total of twelve concerts of his opus 8, under the title Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione (Competition between harmony and invention). In a dedication letter to the Czech count Václav Morzin, included in the edition, Vivaldi apologizes because the earlier four concertos were already known to Morzin - referring to The four seasons - incorporated in this edition. But he expresses the hope that he will like it, because he also included "sonnets, in which everything that happens in the concerts is clearly described".

Anonymous (probably from the pen of Vivaldi himself) demonstrative sonnets (illustrative sonnets) were subsequently written to clarify the music, not only for the listener but also for the performers. It was a revolutionary procedure in the conception of music - which incredibly vividly evoked the babbling of the stream, the singing of birds (of different species - cuckoos, turtledoves and buzzards), the shepherd and his barking dog, the buzzing of bees, storms, drunken dancing, hunting - which is described from both the perspective of the hunter and the hunted, the frozen landscape, and the warm fire in winter.

Each sonnet is divided into three parts, which correspond to each movement of the concertos. And in addition to the sonnets that provide the scenario for the performance, the score also includes instructions, such as: "the dog is barking" (in the second movement Spring), "malaise from the heat" (in the first paragraph Summers), "they fell asleep drunk" (in the second paragraph Autumn).

After publication, Four years old day they enjoyed great success, especially when performed in France, only to fall into oblivion a few decades after Vivaldi's death. They come to light again through the research of Bach's music. Bach's transcriptions of Vivaldi's works encouraged researchers to take a closer look at Vivaldi, and so the Vivaldi renaissance began at the beginning of the 20th century, and the popularity of concerts thereafter The four seasons, which today are part of the general culture and the most valuable musical heritage. One of the most appreciated recordings to this day is that of the Zagreb soloists from 1957, which was then led by Antonio Janigro, and the violin soloist was Jan Tomasow.
