Michelle's seventh album — It Was the Moment — will not disappoint those looking for a new soundtrack to their darkness and saudade. It is perhaps her most vulnerable and expressive work yet, which is not surprising considering that it was written during a period of grief and mental instability. There is a new level of emotional commitment in these songs, confirming Michelle's place in the legacy of dramatic chansonnières.
Themes include the fatalistic surrender of passion, the fleeting nature of encounters, the loss of mother and home, the end of the world, and the loss of reason—in both the best and worst possible ways. Here, Michelle offers her entire sound palette: from dark, Lynchian reality, through elegant humor, to the queen of epic melodrama.
With regularly sold-out shows in cities like Istanbul, Berlin, Warsaw, and Athens, Michelle has carved out a niche for herself that includes the Eastern European diaspora, Berlin’s queer scene, and those with a taste for melodramatic ballads in the vein of Charles Aznavour, Zeki Müren, and Nikolaj Slichenko. While her concerts increasingly focus on live performances and include other musicians, Michelle still produces and releases her own albums, maintaining an intimacy and uniqueness of expression — from her bedroom to yours. A genre that is based partly on melody and style, but even more on her signature fatalistic-festive approach to songwriting.
