Mimika Orchestra, for the first time in its full composition, performs in Split with material from the latest album Altur Mur ("Temple of the sea", in the extinct Veljot language of the Croatian coast), of the previous album Divinities of the Earth and the Waters and an exclusive premiere of new songs from the yet-to-be-recorded latest project.
Mimika Orchestra was founded in London in 2010 by composer and multi-instrumentalist Mak Murtić and vocalist Maja Rivić, and former members of the ensemble are some of the more famous London musicians such as Nubye Garcia, Jamie Benzies, Tila Gichigi Lipera and Theon Cross. The orchestra lineup now consists of some of the most famous jazz and other musicians from the region, with whose musical approach the orchestra "takes you on a journey to the lost soul of the Mediterranean" and to "Old Slavonic ceremonies".
The author of the music, Mak Murtić, says that the Altur Mur album is "a vision of a non-existent place in the Mediterranean, where cultural and personal reinvention intertwine". The lyrics were written by Marta Kolega, for whom the work on the album was "a trip to the Adriatic islands, the atmosphere, manner of behavior, language, lifestyle, views of the world" which she incorporated into "a story that echoes Odysseus". The album Divinities of the Earth and the Waters is a darker story about a "funeral ceremony through old Slavic rituals through progressive music, jazz, rock and traditional influences" and explores the space of the non-existent mythical Balkans.
Mimika Orchestra is an eclectic twenty-member band that performs its own, well-known material and leads the audience into an ecstasy of rhythm and emotion through music and stage performance.
