Continuing the tradition of bringing the world's leading guitarists, this year's thirteenth Classical Guitar Days brings to Split the world music sensation Yamandua Costa, a Brazilian virtuoso on the 7-string guitar (violão de sete cordas).
Yamandu Costa is one of the most respected guitarists of today. Born in 1980 in Passo Fundo (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), he grew up in a musical family and received his first guitar lessons from his father Algaciro Costa, and later studied with the Argentine master Lúcio Yaneler. At the age of 17, he was performing on the big stages of São Paulo, where he was recognized by critics as an exceptional talent, and soon after that his meteoric rise on the world stage began.
Yamandu creates a distinctive and powerful sound with his guitar, in which tradition and modernity intertwine, exploring and reinterpreting the rich musical heritage of South America – from Brazilian samba and chora, through Argentinean milonga and tango, to Uruguayan candombe and chamamé. With his performances, he erases the boundaries between genres, creating music that is at the same time virtuosic, passionate and deeply emotional.
During his career, he performed at the world's most prestigious festivals and concert halls, collaborated with big names such as Toquinho and Lúcio Yaneler, and his work was immortalized in the documentary film Brasileirinho by Finnish director Mika Kaurismäki.
His discography includes more than twenty albums, and critics regularly highlight him as one of the most inventive guitarists of his generation. Yamandu has been nominated for the prestigious Grammy Award several times, which he won in 2021 when he won the Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album for the recording "Bachianinha (Live at Rio Montreux Jazz Festival)".
What sets Yamandua apart is not only his technical perfection, but also his inimitable expressiveness. Each performance is a new journey through the soundscapes of South America – from subtle melodies to eruptive rhythmic improvisations. His name, which in the Tupi-Guarani language means “forerunner of the waters of the world”, perfectly describes his artistic spirit: untamed, powerful and life-giving.
The audience in Split will have the privilege of experiencing a concert that transcends the boundaries of classical guitar and transforms into a musical experience that touches the core of human emotions. Yamandu Costa is an artist who breaks down boundaries and reminds us of the universal language of music.
