With a vivid onstage presence, dazzling technique, and keen musicianship, pianist Olga Kern is widely recognized as one of the great artists of her generation, captivating audiences and critics alike. She was born into a family of musicians and began studying piano at the age of five. At seventeen, she was awarded first prize at the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition, and in 2001, she launched her U.S. career, winning a historic Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition—the only woman in the last 50 years to do so.

A Steinway Artist, Olga is a laureate of several international competitions. In 2016 she was Jury Chairman of both Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition and the first Olga Kern International Piano Competition, where she also holds the title of Artistic Director. In December 2021, Olga was Jury Chairman of the 1st Chopin Animato International Piano competition in Paris, France. In coming seasons, she will continue to serve on the juries of several high-level competitions. Olga frequently gives masterclasses and since 2017 has served on the piano faculty of the Manhattan School of Music. Also in 2017, Olga received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor (New York City). In 2019, she was appointed the Connie & Marc Jacobson Director of Chamber Music at the Virginia Arts Festival.

Olga has performed with many prominent orchestras, including the St. Louis Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Detroit Symphony, and the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, D.C.), as well as Czech Philharmonic, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, Pittsburgh Symphony, São Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Iceland Symphony, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Tokyo’s NHK Symphony Orchestra, and Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. She was also a featured soloist on U.S. tours with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in 2018 and 2022, and during the 2017–2018 season, she served as Artist in Residence at the San Antonio Symphony. Highlights of the 2021–2022 season included performances with the Austin Symphony, Palm Beach Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Santa Rosa Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, Madison Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra, and Academia Teatro alla Scala. She appeared as a soloist on a U.S. tour with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine and performed recitals in Savannah, Sunriver, Huntsville, Fort Worth, Carmel, and Minneapolis as well as in Portugal, Poland, and Sweden. In the 2022–2023 season, she appeared with the Dallas Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Ireland’s National Symphony Orchestra, and Colorado Symphony. She performed recitals at the Minnesota Beethoven Festival and the International Piano Festival of Oeiras as well as in Brno and Mariánské Lázně, Czech Republic; Virginia Beach; Chicago; and San Francisco. In the 2023–2024 season, she performs Rachmaninoff’s four piano concertos and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the Austin Symphony and with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, appears with the Czech Philharmonic on a nation-wide telecast, and tours South Africa and Asia.

In 2012, Olga established the Kern Foundation “Aspiration,” which supports talented musicians around the world.

Olga’s discography includes a Harmonia Mundi recording of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and Christopher Seaman; her Grammy-nominated disc of Rachmaninoff’s Corelli Variations and other transcriptions; and Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Warsaw Philharmonic and Antoni Wit. Other notable releases include Chopin’s Piano Sonatas Nos. 2 and 3, and SONY’s release of the Rachmaninoff Sonata for Cello and Piano with Sol Gabetta. Olga released a new CD in 2022 on the Delos label of Brahms and Shostakovich quintets with the Dalí Quartet.

She is featured in award-winning documentaries about the 2001 Cliburn Competition: The Cliburn: Playing on the Edge, They Came to Play, and Olga’s Journey.

Winner of the 64th International Piano Competition Ferruccio Busoni, Arsenii Moon, 24-year-old pianist, also won the prestigious Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Award, as per unanimous verdict of the jury, which has not been awarded for almost three decades.

Concert tours for the 2024-25 season include more than 50 performances solo and with orchestras in major venues and festivals in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, South Korea and Japan, including such halls as Konzerthaus Vienna, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Seoul Arts center, Tonhalle Zurich as well as recording productions with “Deutsche Grammophone” and with the “ORF Vienna Radio Orchestra”.

Arsenii Moon was born in St Petersburg in 1999. At the age of six he began to study the piano with Elena Zyabreva. In 2010–2017 he studied with Alexander Sandler, initially at the Secondary Specia Music School of the Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory and subsequently at the conservatory itself. He is now finishing his degree as a student of Sergei Babayan at “The Juilliard School” in New York.

In 2009 he made his debut with a symphony orchestra at the St Petersburg Philharmonia, and in 2011 he gave his first recital at the “Mozarthaus Vienna”. Throughout his career Arsenii has been awarded numerous awards such as “Sviatoslav Richter Grant” from the Mstislav Rostropovich Foundation, Yuri Temirkanov Prize,“Verbier Festival” Tabor piano award.

In earlier stages of his career Arsenii has won prizes in several major competitions, such as first prize at the Horowitz Competition in Ukraine, Second prize at the Cliburn Junior Competition in the USA, First prize at the Artur Rubinstein in Memoriam competition in Poland, First prize in the St. Priest competition in France. He appeared at the Mariinsky International Piano Festival, Yury Bashmet festival in MInsk. Within 2015-2021 he was regularly featured in programs of the St. Petersburg Music House. Arsenii appeared with such orchestras as “Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra”, “The Minnesota Orchestra”, “Orchestra Sinfonia di Bari”, “St Petersburg State Symphony Orchestra”, “Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra”, “Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra”. He has collaborated with conductors as Stanislav Kochanovsky, Mei-Ann Chen, Mark Russell Smith, Ian Hobson, Valery Gergiev, among others.

Born in 2003 into a family of musicians in Los Angeles, California, Angel S. Wang began studying the piano at the age of five under the guidance of his mother. Today, he is a student at the P.I. Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory, where he studies with Professor Natalia Trull.

Recently, he achieved laureate status at the XVII International Tchaikovsky Competition, winning the 2nd Prize and Silver Medal. Angel S. Furthermore, Angel S. Wang has participated in various international piano projects and festivals, including the International Piano Project "Pianissimo" (Russia), Rheingau Musik Festival (Germany), American Fine Arts Festival (USA), Rafael Orozco Piano Festival (Spain), Úbeda International Music Festival (Spain), and ArsLonga Music Festival (Moscow, Russia).

He is also a scholarship recipient and an active participant in the Vladimir Spivakov International Charity Foundation,
participant of the Life Line Charity Foundation (Russia) and American Fine Arts Festival.

Angel Wang gives solo concerts in the USA, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Italy, Croatia, at prestigious concert venues such as Carnegie Hall (New York, USA), Musikverein (Vienna, Austria), the Grand, Small, and Rachmaninoff halls of the Moscow Conservatory, Concert halls of the Mariinsky theater (Saint Petersburg, Russia) , Tchaikovsky Concert Hall (Moscow), the State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg, Russia).

Recent and forthcoming orchestral collaborations include the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lille, Finnish Radio Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Helsinki Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Shanghai Symphony at the BBC Proms, amongst others. Conductors he collaborates with include Riccardo Muti, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Ryan Bancroft, Marin Alsop, Duncan Ward, Vasily Petrenko, Edward Gardner, Sir Mark Elder, Thomas Dausgaard, Ruth Reinhardt, Earl Lee, Kerem Hasan, Nuno Coehlo, Dinis Sousa, and Martin Frӧst.

Eric’s third album on Warner Classics was released in December 2022, featuring Schubert Sonatas D. 959 and 784. It was met with worldwide critical acclaim, receiving BBC Music Magazine’s Instrumental Choice, writing, “Lu’s place among today’s Schubertians is confirmed”. His previous album of the Chopin 24 Preludes, and Schumann’s Geistervariationen was hailed ‘truly magical’ by International Piano.

Born in Massachusetts in 1997, Eric Lu first came to international attention as a Laureate of the 2015 Chopin International Competition in Warsaw aged just 17. He was also awarded the International German Piano Award in 2017, and Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2021. Eric was a BBC New Generation Artist from 2019-22. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Robert McDonald and Jonathan Biss. He was also a pupil of Dang Thai Son.

NELI RUŽIĆ - Intervali, 2024.

Efemerne svjetlosne plohe oblikovane prozorskim oknima koje putuju interijerom zgrade reflektirajući univerzalni ritam (Zemlje, Sunčevog sustava, ali i cijele Mliječne staze) temeljno su polazište umjetničkog istraživanja i intervencije Neli Ružić. Mjereći dimenzije neopipljivih vizualnih tragova sunčeve svjetlosti (nečega što bismo poradi izostanka prostornih odnosa i opipljivosti mogli nazvati apsolutnom plohom) i zaustavljajući njihovo mjesto samoljepivom reflektirajućom folijom u točno ispisan sat, Neli poziva promatrača na propitivanje i vlastitu refleksiju o vremenu, mjestu i tragu. Dakako, pritom ga potiče na doživljaj množine implicirajući simultano razotkrivanje različitih vremena, mjesta i tragova.

Fokus se s materijalnih svojstava umjetničkog djela evidentno pomjera prema procesu nastanka i doživljaja te simultanosti različitih bivanja baš na način kako nas na to upućuju postmodernistički tekstovi i studije, ali ponajviše dosadašnji umjetničini interesi i radovi. U tom se kontekstu svojevrsnog palimpsesta – koji ukotvljenost u nepromjenjivoj „vidljivoj“ sadašnjosti smatra nedostatnom, ograničavajućom ili, u najmanju ruku, nedorečenom – i igre neuhvatljivosti i izmicanja zapravo zatiču koordinate istraživanja te, posljedično, nastanka reflektirajućih umjetničkih dijagrama Neli Ružić. Tobožnji monolit sadašnjeg trenutka raspuknut je, a iz pukotina naviru nove mogućnosti doživljaja i pogleda. „Bez Sunca nema rada!“ – rezimirala je početak svoje intervencije umjetnica, svjesna oblacima prekrivenog neba, otvarajući tom kratkom konstatacijom prostor temeljnim pitanjima i mogućim kritičkim osvrtima, ali i inicijalnom razumijevanju podloge svoga nenametljivog umjetničkog čina izrazita estetskog nerva.

Rakursi

Naziv ciklusa Chiaroscuro svoje ishodište pronalazi u povijesti likovnih umjetnosti još u renesansi kad su se pokušali pronaći novi načini „modeliranja“ slikarskog prizora. Kasnije se jazz glazba i likovna umjetnost prate i prožimaju, zajednički se opirući konvencijama i čvrsto zadanim okvirima i tendirajući improvizaciji te poliritmiji. Na tragu slične izmaknute dijaloške prakse nastaje i program elastičnih Rakursa koji je osmislio kustos Dalibor Prančević. U rasporedu koncerata jazz glazbe izmjenjuju se prostorno specifične intervencije četvoro umjetnika (Vedrana Perkova, Viktora Popovića, Neli Ružić, Lorena Živkovića Kuljiša) koji kao polazišnu točku koriste zgradu Hrvatskog doma, značajnog susretišta glazbe i vizualne umjetnosti.

Izložbeni program Rakursi posvećeni su Davoru Matičeviću (Split, 1945. – Zagreb, 1994.) povodom tridesete obljetnice njegove rane smrti. Bio je ključna figura kustoskog rada tijekom 1970-ih i 1980-ih, temeljito proučavajući pitanja suvremene umjetnosti, a posebice ističući važnost intervencija suvremenih umjetnika u javnom prostoru. Njegov rad i projekti ostavili su dubok trag i snažan utjecaj na suvremenu umjetničku i kustosku scenu u Hrvatskoj.

Pod nazivom Ljubavna pisma, program kratkih filmova na qFEST-u odaje počast umjetnicima pionirima koji su svojim kreativnim izričajima utrli put budućim generacijama. Poput cijenjenih kvir obiteljskih albuma, ovi filmovi koriste fotografske arhive za povezivanje različitih prostora i vremena. Kroz otkrivanje fotografija koje odražavaju aspekte nas samih, s filmovima putujemo na nova mjesta i aktiviramo niz osjećanja.

Ovi filmovi, kao svojevrsna ljubavna pisma, upućena su i posvećena Nazariju Luqueu, autoru prvih otvoreno gej stripova u Španjolskoj; inspirativnim arapskim ženama koje su 1920-ih prihvatile cross-dressing; talentiranom crnom kvir fotograf Ajamu; i zanosnoj Valery Taccarelli. S puno ljubavi prema njima svima.

Selekciju filmova napravio je Pol Merchan s kojim razgovaramo nakon projekcije njegovog filma.

Filmski program za qFEST realiziran je u suradnji s Xposed Queer Film Festival. qFEST festivalski je program kolektiva queerANarchive koji u prostore kulture grada Splita donosi šarolik i izazovan program izložbi, izvedbi, filmskih projekcija, radionica i zabava kojima osigurava participaciju u kulturi LGBTIQ zajednice.

El jardín de los faunos (Pol Merchan, Njemačka/Španjolska, 2022., 24’) & razgovor s autorom

Nazario, utemeljitelj španjolskog underground strip pokreta i pionir gay grafičkog romana, osvrće se na svoj život pun događaja, kao i na svoja blistava i eksplicitna djela.

Neo Nahda (May Ziadé, Velika Britanija, 2023., 12’)

Mona, mlada žena u Londonu, pronalazi arhivirane fotografije arapskih žena koje se preodijevaju u muškarce 1920-ih godina. Negdje između svojih fantazija i stvarnosti, ona započinje grozničavo putovanje otkrivanja izgubljene povijesti i vlastitog identiteta.

The Homecoming: A short film about Ajamu (Topher Campbell, Velika Britanija, 1996., 17’)

Godina je 1995. Ajamu, crni queer fotograf, organizira svoju prvu samostalnu izložbu u rodnom gradu Huddersfieldu. Bez novca je i uskoro će mu isključiti struju. Kako može doći tamo iz Londona? Na svom putu susreće neke prijatelje i neprijatelje, uključujući svog najboljeg prijatelja Michaela i zgodnog homofoba kojeg kruži ulicama. Tu su i pronicljivi komentari Stuarta Halla i umjetnice Sonie Boyce, kao i slike Brixtona promijenjenog gentrifikacijom i priljevom bijelih ljudi. Naposljetku Ajamua odvozi zgodni šofer te naposljetku može izjaviti tko je i koje mu je mjesto u svijetu.

Valery Alexanderplatz (Silvia Maggi, Njemačka/Italija, 2023., 28’)

Eksperimentalni kratki film o životu talijanske trans-aktivistice Valérie Taccarelli sniman je u centru Berlina - Mitte, oko slavnog Alexanderplatza. Priča počinje s Milvom, popularnom talijanskom divom i njenom najpoznatijom pjesmom Alexanderplatz. Ipak, samo rijetki znaju da je ova pjesma zapravo adaptacija pjesme Valery Alfreda Cohena, objavljene 1978. Valery je bila 15-godišnja trans tinejdžerica, sada poznata kao Valérie Taccarelli.

Karneval životinja: pjevaj, pleši, sviraj, slušaj! namijenjen je učenicima razredne nastave u sklopu kojeg će sudionici uz pomoć mašte i izvođače stvoriti životinjsko carstvo. Aktivnim sudjelovanjem pomoći će Noi da pred veliki potop, koji je inspirirao Saint-Saënsa za ovo djelo, okupi u arku životinje. Uz autorsku pjesmu upoznat će pravila koncertnog bontona, a zatim postaju aktivni sudionici i kreatori radionice. Prvi stavak Kraljevski marš lava stihovima i pjevanjem dočarava kralja životinja, a imitirajući lavlju riku sudionici se pretvaraju u krdo lavova te usvajaju razlike instrumentalne i vokalno-instrumentalne glazbe. Uz stavak Avijarij sudjeluju imitirajući ptičji pjev, a potom traže kukavicu na kraju šume aktivnim slušanjem uz istoimeni stavak. Klavesi u Fosilima postaju glazbeni i radni instrument dok sudionici poput paleontologa otkrivaju okamine da bi u Finalu kroz pjesmu i tjeloglazbu uveli sve preostale životinje u arku.

Program se održava u suradnji Hrvatskog doma Split (kao nastavne baze) i Umjetničke akademije Sveučilišta u Splitu kao poticaj najboljim studentima za daljnji rad.
