Camille Saint-Saëns: Carnival of the Animals , interactive concert – This interactive concert for children and young people is held in co-production with the Split Academy of Arts. An orchestra of about twenty students, led by their professor, experienced conductor Hari Zlodra, performs an integral suite of fourteen movements, in which students will learn about the characteristics of instruments and orchestras as an ensemble in a casual atmosphere. Although Carnival of the Animals was originally composed for a small chamber orchestra that includes two pianos, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, flute and piccolo flute, clarinet, xylophone and glass accordion, the suite is often performed today in various transcriptions, including one for the entire orchestra. In the performance by the UMAS Orchestra, instrumental reinforcement will feature the string and wind sections, while one pianist will skillfully unite the two piano parts. The glass accordion will be brought to life by two piccolo flutes, the Elephant movement will be performed in unison by four cellos instead of a double bass, while the xylophone will be absent from the performance, but the effect of the clatter of fossil bones from the movement of the same name will gain a new dimension with rich orchestral colors. The conductor will communicate with his orchestra with his hands and baton, while taking the audience on an educational journey and through conversation. He will introduce them to biographical sketches of the composer, the historical circumstances in which the work was created, why Camille Saint-Saëns banned the performance of all movements except the Swan during his lifetime , and what can be expressed through music. For this occasion, the Ivo Tijardović Art Nouveau Hall will be transformed into a classroom with live music in close collaboration with the musicians and the conductor, who invites students to share their impressions, repeat the content they have already learned, and acquire new ones, making himself available for all questions and comments.
