CARNIVAL OF ANIMALS
One of the most beloved classical works of all ages, the zoological suite Carnival of Animals by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, is the thematic backbone of concert and musical stage performances and music workshops of the Croatian Home Split as part of the Concert Lab program launched with the aim of bringing classical music to children and young people. art. The humorous work of fourteen movements, in which the composer portrays animal and human characters while using parodies and quotes from well-known musical works, is especially close to children and young people due to its non-musical content. The programmatic character suggests who the composer is conjuring up with the music already by the name of the suite and the movements composed like a series of miniatures. The Carnival of Animals has become a repertoire on concert and theater stages around the world, and individual pieces, such as the Swan or the Elephant, are often part of cello and double bass repertoire. In numerous adaptations, this piece of music is combined with poetic or prose texts written especially for individual performances, and it has also served as a background in feature films, documentaries and cartoons, commercials and theater productions.
Musical and puppet adaptation Carnival of Animals (organized sale) - In the co-production of the Croatian Home Split and the City Puppet Theater Split, the text and direction of Siniša Novković brings a new vision of the suite in which music merges with other arts. With the acting tools of Justina Vojaković Fingler, Sanja Crljen, Franjo Đaković and Stipe Gugić, together with the theatrical magic, which is contributed by the costumes of Sonja Obradović, scenography, props and puppets by Tina Vukasović Đaković and the meticulous lighting design of Lucijan Roki, they enliven the concert of pianist Tonči Tranfić. In addition to his refined musical performance of selected pieces, audiences of all ages from kindergarten age are presented with different types of art, theater and genre acting with plenty of laughter and fun. The first act, The Royal March of the Lion, is shown with the dramatic acting of the theater for adults, Hens and Rooster served as an ideal training ground for children's theater, and Antelopes (fast animals) bring physical, i.e. contemporary theater. Turtles embody opera with a caricatured singing technique and ninja turtles, Elephant puppetry, with Aviary shadow theater. The aquarium takes the audience into the depths of the sea with a projection screen showing cinematographic skills, Fossils presents a musical with dinosaurs, the Swan ballet, while the music-puppet performance comes to an end with the Finale, in which the art of comics is presented. Following in the footsteps of the composer himself, who found inspiration in the Old Testament confession about Noah's Ark, but in his musical work he portrays animals and people humorously mocking human vices or imitating animals using parodies and quotes from well-known musical works, this adaptation also reached out to contemporary musical quotes with dramatic expression in a satirical spirit.
Camille Saint-Saëns: Karneval animal, interactive concert (organized sale) – This interactive concert for children and young people is held in co-production with the Academy of Arts in Split. An orchestra of about twenty students under the leadership of their professor, experienced conductor Harij Zlodra, performs an integral suite of fourteen movements, during which, in a casual atmosphere, the students will get to know the characteristics of the instruments and the orchestra as an ensemble. Although Carnival of the Animals was originally composed for a small chamber orchestra including two pianos, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, flute and piccolo flute, clarinet, xylophone and glass accordion, the suite is often performed today in various transcriptions, including one for full orchestra. . In the performance of the UMAS Orchestra, the string and wind sections will be marked by instrumental reinforcement, while a pianist will skilfully unite the two piano sections. The glass accordion will be evoked by two piccolo flutes, the Elephant movement will be performed in unison by four cellos instead of the double bass, while the xylophone will be absent, but the effect of the clinking of fossil bones from the movement of the same name will gain a new dimension with rich orchestral colors. The conductor will communicate with his orchestra with his hands and baton, while he will take the audience on an educational journey and conversation. They will be introduced to biographical sketches of the composer, the historical circumstances in which the work was created, why Camille Saint-Saëns forbade the performance of all movements during his lifetime, except for the Swan, and that everything can be presented with music. For this occasion, the Art Nouveau hall of Ivo Tijardović will be transformed into a classroom with live music in close cooperation with musicians and a conductor who invites students to share impressions, repeat already acquired content and acquire new ones, making himself available for all questions and comments.
Interactive musical workshops - They are intended for students of primary school classes and subject classes, where along with selected items from the Carnival of Animals suite, music pedagogue, musicologist and music critic Karmen Širović moderates the workshops with conversation, singing, body music and dance accompanied by pianist Tonči Tranfić. The workshop program correlates with the results of the Annual Performance Curriculum for the subject Music Culture and cross-curricular topics, and is an ideal opportunity for a music culture lesson or a teacher's lesson in the field in the appropriate environment of the concert space of the Jakov Gotovac Music Hall.
Karneval animal: sing, dance, play, listen! - is intended for primary school students, in which the participants will create an animal kingdom with the help of imagination and performers. By actively participating, he will help Noah to gather the animals in the ark before the great flood, which inspired Saint-Saëns for this work. Along with the author's song, they will learn the rules of concert etiquette, and then become active participants and creators of the workshop. The first movement of the Royal March of the Lion evokes the king of animals with lyrics and singing, and imitating the lion's roar, the participants turn into a herd of lions and adopt the differences of instrumental and vocal-instrumental music. With the piece Aviary, they participate by imitating birdsong, and then look for the cuckoo at the end of the forest by actively listening to the piece of the same name. In Fosile, the keys become a musical and working instrument while the participants, like paleontologists, discover fossils in order to bring all the remaining animals into the ark in the Final through song and body music.
Karneval animal: od ideas do composing - intended for the students of the course, along with the selected items of the zoological suite, the composer's invitation approaches the participants. They will discover how Camille Saint-Saëns got the idea for this zoological fantasy, which existing compositions he was inspired by, which musical quotes he used and which of the contemporary composers he influenced. With a live musical performance, participants become active performers of selected pieces. They will imitate the sluggish gait of elephants and adopt the meter and rhythm, dance the cancan in different tempos, the fast and lively gallop from Jacques Offenbach's operetta Orpheus in the underground and the slow tempo of Saint-Saëns' Tortoise movement. In the Carnival of the Animals by John Williams, he found inspiration for the movie music about Harry Potter, so with the piece Aquarium, the participants become wizards and outline the melody with the movements of light sticks. Along with the movement, Fosili will play the harpsichord and sing a fragment of the well-known children's song Blistaj, blistaj zvijezdo mala, which the composer quotes, and the Finale will enrich the original composition with body music. In doing so, participants will learn or repeat the rules of concert etiquette, some of the musical components and the suite as a musical genre.
