Split International Music Competition (SIMC) is a platform for young musicians from all over the world, giving them the opportunity to show their talent, gain valuable experience and make international contacts. The competition is held in the beautiful city of Split, known for its rich musical tradition and cultural heritage.

The competition is open to performers of all nationalities up to the age of 32. Participants will have the opportunity to perform in front of distinguished jury members who are recognized experts in their field, and win attractive prizes.

In addition to the competitive part, SIMC also offers the opportunity to participate in masterclasses, concerts and other educational activities, which encourages artistic development and exchange of knowledge among young musicians. This event not only promotes art, but also brings together music lovers in a unique environment that celebrates creativity and talent.

Programme

RULES:

The competition is open to guitarists of all nationalities up to the age of 32. 

The finale should include compositions from at least two different stylistic periods, one of which must be from the Classical or Romantic periods. 

It is not allowed to repeat compositions from previous stages of the competition. 

FIRST STAGE (March 3 and 4, 2025): free program.

FINALS: 5. March 2025.

It is not mandatory, but it is recommended to include at least one work by a Croatian composer in the semi-final or final. The list of Croatian composers can be found here.

The jury

Zoran Dukić

Croatia
Zoran Dukić, born in 1969 in Zagreb, is one of the most outstanding classical guitarists of our time. He met the guitar already at the age of six, and today he leaves a strong impression on audiences around the world through his performances, either as a soloist or with an orchestra, in prestigious concert halls such as Palau de la Música in Barcelona, ​​Carnegie Hall in New York, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Tchaikovsky in Moscow.


Zoran's career flourished during the competitive years (1990-1997), when he won a number of competitions, including both the "Andrés Segovia" competitions in Granada and Palma de Mallorca – the only guitarist to do so. In addition, he won prizes in competitions dedicated to Fernando Soro, Manuel Ponce, Manuel de Falla and Francisco Tárrega.

His enthusiasm for teaching is equally impressive. Since 1997, he has been teaching at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, where he leads one of the most successful classical guitar classes in Europe, and in addition regularly holds master classes around the world. He is an active performer of chamber music, co-founder of the European Guitar Quartet, the Croatian Guitar Quartet and plays in a duet with Aniello Desideri.

During his career, he recorded numerous albums for publishing houses in Germany, Spain, Belgium, Brazil and Canada, while since 2011 he has been performing as an artist for D'Addario.

Marco Tamayo

Cuba / Austria
Marco Tamayo, a Cuban guitarist with Austrian citizenship, is known as "Il Re della Chitarra" (King of the Guitar), a title awarded to him by the Italian press L'Stampa. Tamayo has won more than 25 prizes in international competitions, including prestigious competitions such as Michele Pittaluga - Città di Alessandria, Andrés Segovia, Leo Brouwer in Havana and Nikita Koshkin in Austria. He is currently a professor of classical guitar at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UDK), where he leads an internationally recognized class of students.

With a rich solo career, Tamayo regularly performs as a member of chamber ensembles and as a soloist with orchestras around the world. He performed with orchestras such as the Philharmonic in Turin, the Philharmonic in St. Petersburg, the Havana Philharmonic and the Oulu Philharmonic Orchestra, with eminent conductors such as Ennio Morricone, Justuz Frantz and Hannu Lintu.

Pedagogically, he has proven himself as a professor at the University of Sydney, the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and the Academy of Arts in Gdansk. His book Essential Principles for the Interpretation of the Classical Guitar revolutionized the approach to teaching classical guitar.

In addition to his performing and teaching career, Tamayo is also president of the jury and artistic director of the Michele Pittaluga International Guitar Competition in Italy. He is also the founder and director of the International Guitar Competition and Festival in Klagenfurt. Tamayo plays the guitar of the American builder Stephen Connor.

George Panetsos

Grčka
Jorgos Panetsos, born in Athens, Greece, is a distinguished classical guitarist and respected educator. He began his musical education at the National Conservatory in Athens, where he studied with Andrés Paleologos and Thras Stavrou. He continued his further studies with Luisa Walker at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he graduated with the highest honors. He trained at master classes with renowned guitarists David Russell and Oscar Ghiglia in Siena, where he received the prestigious "Diploma di merito".

During his career, Panetsos has given concerts in nearly 30 countries, including the United States, China, Venezuela, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, India and Thailand. As a soloist, he performed with renowned orchestras such as the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Orquesta Municipal in Caracas, the Kielce Philharmonic Orchestra and the Slovak Sinfonietta from Žilina. He collaborated with renowned artists such as René Kubelik and Claudia Eder, and in 1998 he performed in Vienna with Paul Badura-Skoda.

In addition to his concert career, Panetsos is active as a pedagogue at prestigious institutions, including the "Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna" and the "Konservatorium für Musik und Dramatische Kunst in Wien". He is a visiting lecturer at numerous universities around the world, including the University of Graz, the University of Wisconsin, the Korea National University of the Arts, the Central Conservatory in Beijing, and Bangkok University. He is also a frequent guest and lecturer at many international music festivals.

Panetsos is a regular member of the jury at prestigious competitions, such as "Andrés Segovia", "JK Mertz", "Mauro Giuliani" and "Kutná Hora Biennial Competition". He is the founder and artistic director of the famous international guitar festival "Forum Gitarre Wien", which has been held in Vienna since 1990 and has a high international reputation.

His dedication to musical education and artistic development of young musicians makes him one of the most important figures in the world of classical guitar.

Mislav Režić

Croatia
Mislav Režić, one of the leading Croatian guitarists, leads a successful international career as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher. Born in 1978 in Split, he studied at the Art Academy in his hometown under Goran Listeš, where he graduated in 2001 as the best student of his generation. He continued his education in the Netherlands, where he obtained his master's degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in the class of Zoran Dukić and at the Conservatory in Maastricht under Carlo Marchione. He has won numerous awards, including international awards at guitar competitions in Zwolle (2002) and Enschede (2007), while in 2003 he was awarded the award of the Croatian Society of Music Artists for being one of the most talented young musicians in Croatia.

Režić's interest in different musical styles and ability to perform on contemporary and historical instruments enabled him to collaborate with different musicians and ensembles. He is the founder of the Dutch-based ensemble Machetes and the Greek ensemble Tetttix, which specialize in contemporary music. She also performs with harpsichordist Cvetanka Sozovska, mezzo-soprano Tanja Šimić and flautist Antigoni Tsalla, with whom she performs 19th century music on historical instruments.

Particularly interested in contemporary music, Režić commissions and premieres new works for the guitar, collaborating with renowned composers such as Vlada Sunko, Nikoleta Chatzopoulou and Michalis Paraskakis. His album "Auburn", released in 2017 on the Greek label DNA, is dedicated to contemporary music for classical and electric guitar and includes works by Steve Reich, Toru Takemitsu and Arthur Kampel.

In addition to his concert career, Režić also devotes himself to pedagogical work. He is the co-founder and artistic director of the festival "Musical evenings in St. Jerome" and the annual international summer guitar course in Kaštela. He is also the winner of the award of the Ivo Tijardović Hall - Croatian Home Split for the 2023/24 season. as part of a duo with Gordan Tudor, with whom he will be artist-in-residence in Split in the 2024/25 season.

Anđela Jerkunica

Croatia

Anđela Jerkunica, born in Split, grew up in a musical environment; her father was an opera singer, and her brother Marin Jerkunica was a guitarist. The guitar attracted her from early childhood, and she started playing at the age of seven. She finished secondary music school under the mentorship of professor Marijo Peručić, and finished her guitar studies at the Academy of Music in Zagreb, in the class of professor Ante Čaglj. She trained with professor Goran Listeš and through seminars with renowned guitar pedagogues from Croatia and the world, including Zoran Dukić, Darko Petrinjak and Carlo Marchione.


In 2001, Anđela received the Annual Award of the Croatian Association of Music and Dance Educators for her contribution in the field of music education. Her students won numerous prizes at competitions in Croatia and abroad.


She realized her love for chamber music through participation in various musical ensembles, including the "Amicorde Guitar Trio" ensemble, in which she has been playing since 2009. She is active as a jury member at regional and international competitions, and as a lecturer at seminars and master workshops. Since 2011, she has been a member of the Croatian Association of Guitar Pedagogues and the Examination Committee for taking professional exams. In addition to his many years of participation in the organization of the "Daleki Akordi" competition for young musicians, he holds the title of professor advisor from 2021.


Today, she works as a teacher at the Josip Hatze School of Music in Split, where she has been the head of the guitar, mandolin and harp department since 2009.
