The distinctive pianism of Ida Gamulin has been capturing the attention of the Croatian and world music scene for 35 years. The last recitals in the concert halls of Oslo, Prague, Brussels and Helsinki, tell about her artistic journey that started in London by winning the prestigious Myra Hess award and her debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.
After graduating from the Academy of Music in Zagreb, he won the Svetislav Stančić award at the Yugoslav competition of jazz artists and went to London, where he trained with renowned pianists Alfred Brendel, John Lill, Stephen Kovacevich and Annie Fischer.
In 1983, he began his international career by winning the prestigious Myra Hess award in London, where he made his debut at the Queen Elizabeth Hall and recorded his first LP for EMI. The beginnings of her international career were accompanied by excellent reviews, so Noel Goodwin in the newspaper "The Times" writes: "...in a stylistically diverse and demanding program, Ida Gamulin presented herself as an exceptional pianist with strong expression..., from poetic contemplation to powerful bravura of granite solid octaves..., in a manner reminiscent of Annie Fischer.", while David Money in the "Daily Telegraph" points out: "A supreme interpreter of Bach..., a master of legato and rich sonority..., she realized the strength and poetry of Beethoven sonata.., a magical performance."
Among the numerous recognitions, in addition to the Myra Hess award, the special award of the Festival in Freiburg and the Milka Trnin award stand out. The recording of the Brahms Sonata in F minor was declared the best performance in the 2005 American Classical Music Directory.
International career leads Ida Gamulin to many cultural centers of Europe, the United States of America and Asia, where she performs in prestigious halls (Rudolfinum, Unisa Concert Hall, F.Liszt Academy, Wigmore Hall, St.Martin-in-the-fields, Auditorio Manuel de Falla ). She is a guest of international festivals in Spoletto, Varna, Dubrovnik and the Janaček Festival, where she performs with distinguished conductors and orchestras.
Ida Gamulin records for BBC, France Musique, CBS, Bayerischer Rundfunk, for EMI-Mava and Croatia Records. So far, she has released 21 sound carriers, and recently 7 CD-boxes were promoted on the occasion of 30 years of cooperation with the publishing house Croatia Records.
Many Croatian composers, such as Boris Papandopulo, Milko Kelemen, Anđelko Klobučar, Igor Kuljerić, Ivo Josipović and Berislav Šipuš, dedicated their compositions to her, which she premiered and permanently recorded on sound carriers. She pays particular attention to the music of Dora Pejačević, and has prepared a complete opus of piano miniatures for the press, held numerous concerts with her works, and immortalized the most famous miniatures and cycles and the Piano Quintet in U minor on audio carriers.
In parallel with her concert career, Ida Gamulin is a full-time professor at the Music Academy of the University of Zagreb. She holds interpretation seminars at prestigious European academies, is a member of judging panels of international piano competitions and has been the president of EPTA Croatia since 2004.
