Brushy One String is a unique phenomenon of the world roots and reggae scene - a Jamaican singer-songwriter who created a recognizable and surprisingly rich musical expression from a guitar with a single string. His music combines reggae, folk and blues, relying on a strong baritone, direct communication with the audience, rhythmic hitting on the body of the guitar and infectious grooves that create the impression of a much wider instrumental sound. His unusual musical journey began after a dream that prompted him to pick up a guitar with only one string left, and he turned this very limitation into his own artistic signature. From street performances in Jamaica to major international festivals and stages, including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Summerjam in Cologne and GlobalFEST in New York, Brushy has built a reputation as a charismatic performer whose concerts are based on spontaneity, humor, strong rhythmicity and direct connection with the audience.
Brushy One String ( Andrew Anthony Chin ) is a Jamaican singer, songwriter and guitarist with a unique artistic journey. He lost his parents at an early age and only learned to read as an adult. He inherited his musical talent from his family: his father was a Jamaican soul singer Freddy McKay, while his mother Beverly Foster sang and performed as a backing vocalist.
As a boy, he experimented with different musical styles and played percussion instruments on the street, and for a while he also played the guitar. According to his own recollection, he played it so hard that he broke five of its six strings, after which the instrument was put aside for a long time. The turning point came after a dream in which, he says, he was told that he should play the single-string guitar. He soon developed his own technique and began performing in markets, developing the style that would become his trademark.
His musical expression is based on a combination of deep baritone, rhythmic guitar strumming and melodic-bass patterns performed on only one string. He attracted wider international attention with the documentary films RiseUp and The King of One String , and then with performances at international festivals and concert stages. Critics especially point out his ability to achieve a strong, rhythmic and full sound with minimal means and directly involve the audience in the performance.
