Miguel Zenón belongs to the inner circle of the most influential saxophonists and composers in contemporary jazz. A Grammy winner, a Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundation grantee, and a Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, Zenón has built a style that seamlessly blends innovation and tradition throughout his career.
Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenón forged his artistic identity at the intersection of modern jazz and the musical traditions of his own cultural heritage. Rather than treating the two worlds separately, he fuses them into a single compositional and improvisational language, exploring their rhythm, melody, structure, and social context.
As a writer and performer, he has released eighteen albums under his own name. Recent releases include the Grammy-nominated Vanguardia Subterránea: Live at The Village Vanguard in 2024, and the Grammy-winning El Arte del Bolero Vol. 2 in 2023.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with a number of key figures in contemporary jazz, including Charlie Haden, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, David Sánchez, Danilo Pérez, Kurt Elling, Steve Coleman, Ray Barretto, Bobby Hutcherson and many others, as well as with ensembles such as the SFJAZZ Collective, the Village Vanguard Orchestra and the Mingus Big Band.
Zenón's work is particularly notable for its ability to treat jazz both as a contemporary artistic language and as a deeply rooted cultural practice. The MacArthur Foundation described him in 2008 as an artist who simultaneously renews the artistic, cultural, and social traditions of jazz and creates a new jazz language for the 21st century.
In addition to his performing career, Miguel Zenón is actively involved as a composer, educator, and cultural initiator. His music has been commissioned by SFJAZZ, NYO Jazz, Chamber Music America, MIT, PRISM Quartet, Spektral Quartet, and other institutions and ensembles, and he has taught and given master classes at leading music institutions around the world.
